Most people picture water damage as something loud. A pipe bursting, a water heater letting go, a storm pushing water under the door.
The version that does the most quiet damage in an Oklahoma August makes no sound at all. It comes from the air conditioner, and by the time anyone notices, the ceiling below it is already stained.

That water drips into a shallow drain pan beneath the coil, then leaves the house through a length of PVC called the condensate drain line. In a working system you never see any of it.

The inside of a condensate line is dark, wet, and warm for months at a time. That is close to ideal conditions for algae and biological slime.
Buildup starts as a film and thickens until it acts as a dam. Dust pulled through the system settles into it, and at some point the water stops moving.
