Most water damage announces itself. A pipe bursts, a water heater lets go, a storm pushes water under a door. A slab leak does none of that. It happens in a supply or drain line buried in or beneath the concrete your house sits on, and it can run for weeks before anything shows up in a room you use. If your Durant home sits on a concrete slab, this is one of the most expensive problems you can fail to notice in time, and the local soil and rainfall make it more likely rather than less.

What a Slab Leak Actually Is

A slab foundation is a single poured concrete pad. In most homes built on one, water supply lines and drain lines run either through the slab or in the fill directly beneath it. A hot, dry August followed by a wet fall is a full cycle of expansion and contraction working on the same joints.

Bryan County sits at the wet end of that spread. More rain means wetter soil for longer, more swell-and-shrink cycling, and less ability for the ground under a slab to dry out once water gets into it.

Plumbing that has been in the ground a long time. Durant has both newer subdivisions and a large stock of older homes with original supply lines. Galvanized and older copper lines corrode from the inside and thin over time, and a pinhole in a line under six inches of concrete is not something a homeowner is ever going to see.

Homeowners closer to the lake have a second, separate concern worth reading up on, because flood risk arriving from outside the house behaves very differently from a leak working upward from below.

Six Signs Durant Homeowners Notice First

  1. A warm spot on the floor. A hot-water supply leak heats the slab above it. On tile or vinyl this is often the first thing anyone notices, usually with bare feet, usually in a hallway or near a bathroom.
  2. The sound of running water with everything turned off. Stand in a quiet house at night with no fixtures running and no appliances cycling. A faint continuous hiss or rush near a floor is a strong indicator.

  4. Flooring that cups, lifts, or separates for no clear reason. Wood planks that crown, vinyl that bubbles, tile that develops a hollow sound when tapped, or grout lines that crack in a pattern rather than a single spot.
  5. A musty smell that has no visible source. Moisture rising through the slab feeds growth under the flooring and inside the base of walls, where nothing is visible until the material is removed.
  6. A water bill that climbed without an explanation. This one is measurable, and it is the cheapest test you can run.

How to Confirm It Before You Call Anyone

Two checks take almost no time and cost nothing.

Run a meter test. The EPA’s Fix a Leak Week guidance recommends reading your water meter before and after a two-hour window in which no water is used anywhere in the house. Shut off ice makers and irrigation, and do not flush. If the meter has moved at all, water is going somewhere it should not.

Look at your winter usage. The same EPA guidance notes that a family of four using more than 12,000 gallons in a cold month such as January or February may have serious leaks. Compare a recent bill to the same month a year earlier.

For context on scale, the EPA reports that the average household’s leaks account for more than 9,300 gallons of water wasted each year, and that nine percent of homes have leaks wasting 50 gallons or more per day. Under a slab, that volume is not going down a drain. It is going into the ground beneath your living room.

If the meter test comes back positive, isolate the supply side by shutting off the valve at the water heater and repeating the test. Movement with the water heater isolated points toward the cold line; no movement points toward the hot line, which also matches the warm-floor symptom.

What Happens When a Slab Leak Runs Too Long

The plumbing repair is often the smaller half of the bill. The damage around it is what escalates.

Moisture wicks upward into the bottom plates of the walls and into cabinet bases sitting on the slab. Flooring adhesive fails. Baseboards swell from the bottom. And because the material stays damp continuously rather than drying out, the conditions are ideal for growth. The EPA advises drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold, and a slab leak that has run for six weeks has been outside that window from the first day.

Insurance adds another reason to move fast. Policies commonly treat sudden and accidental water damage differently from damage attributed to a long-running leak that went unaddressed. Documenting when you found it and acting promptly protects the claim. It is also worth knowing the water damage signs most Oklahoma homeowners miss, since a slab leak rarely arrives alone in a house with aging plumbing.

When to Stop Investigating and Get Help

Call a licensed plumber for leak location and repair once the meter test confirms water is moving. Slab leak location uses acoustic listening equipment, pressure testing, and sometimes tracer gas, and pinpointing before breaking concrete is what keeps the repair small.

Bring in a restoration contractor when moisture has already reached flooring, walls, or cabinets, when there is any musty odor, or when the leak is on the drain side. Fixing the pipe stops the source; it does nothing for the water already in the structure.
